“A ‘frag’ (short for ‘fragment’) is the term given to a small piece of coral that has been cut off from a larger colony. Anyone with knowledge of aquatic life will realize that this frag I’ve painted is one that does not exist. Not only that, it looks like there are a couple crystals growing on it. I thought it would be interesting to juxtapose what is alive and that which is inanimate. Both corals and crystals start with initial structures and add more units, but corals can repair and respond to the environment, while crystals cannot. In a metaphysical sense the coral transcends the limitations of the crystalline realm.”
