Original painting by: Jonathan Aumen

Medium: fire soot, watercolor, gouache, tea

“I developed my own technique to create these feathered lovelies. I asked myself: ‘What are three things you really love?’ Immediately birds, fire and tea came to mind. So I got a piece of paper, brewed some tea, found a box of matches and went to work. The majority of these bird paintings are ‘painted’ with fire soot from matches. I hold the painting upside down and light matches underneath. You really have to let go because you never know what you’re going to get. What comes from it is incredible though! You get such a soft velvety effect with the soot and it creates such mood.

This particular piece was made for my wife when she was pregnant with our second child. It was a very hard pregnancy with some dark times but light eventually broke through the clouds.”
